Shopping therapy?

28 Jan

I’m not convinced by this article in The Independent, which states that choosing and paying for goods can reduce sadness. Surely any buzz you get from shopping is a temporary one. And if you seriously feel you need retail therapy – as in spending money to make you feel better – you probably have underlying problems that need addressing in more constructive ways.

I do love shops and I enjoy shopping. I also fully accept that a window shop or browse round a swanky store can be a welcome distraction from your thoughts (as can a walk in the park or along the river), but it’s a temporary one. Buying stuff to aid feelings of control and reduce sadness? Give me a break; this sounds like dangerous talk to me. What do you think?

Just in case you are in need of further gentle distraction from your day, let me help:

Divert your attention from that pressing email, put your pen down, scroll to the pics below. Time for a coffee break window/screen browse – I’ve done the hard work (ahem) for you.

Enjoy, as I did today, but believe me, it won’t improve your health.

(Thanks to Peces y Peces for letting me snap – becoming a habit!)
