A bag for your life

20 Jan

I had the pleasure the other day of meeting Esteban – a very important man. He and his brother design and make, with their very own hands, things that women like me unashamedly swoon over – 🌟leather handbags🌟.

I get a bit nervous before asking people if I can feature their work in my blog, I’m never sure if my pigeon Spanish “I write blog in style for woman” really cuts it, so I was overwhelmed by the generosity and enthusiasm that greeted me when I approached Esteban in his store, which I’ve admired and bought from over the years that I’ve been visiting this part of Spain.

He hopped off his stool and took me to the section that displayed his and his brother’s hand-made designs. Proudly facing the typical Moroccan style satchels, Esteban’s work is made from a softer leather (bull and ostrich) and designed with an ergonomic practicality as well as for aesthetics. The triangle shoulder bag for example, has a fold-out flap concealing a zipped compartment for security and easy reach.

This jewel of a leather boutique called Arnés Cuero is two things, a place to buy a new quality handbag, holdall, work bag, purse, belt or saddle (you never know when you may need one) and a reward for making it up to Mojácar Pueblo whose white washed buildings cling to the sides of the steep hill that the village is built on.

The ancient, earthy, polished aroma of quality leather embraces you as you cross the threshold and entices you to get up close to the variety of leather goods on display. Feel their smooth exteriors, take a breath of the soft interior, click clasps, undo buckles, pop poppers, adjust the straps for size – bag heaven.

Of course what stands out in Esteban’s bags is the quality of the craftsmanship. I have spent many an hour (and many a pound) in the bag departments of Harvey Nicks, House of Fraser, even Bloomingdales, but I’d have one of these pieces made locally and sustainably by traditional craftsmen any day over a Versace or Hermès classic – and at around €85, you’d be mad not to.

Thank you, Esteban.
Arnés Cuero can be found on Plaza Nueva, Mojácar Pueblo
